How to Use Essential Oils
How to Use Essential Oils
Massage – Both body and facial massage can benefit from the intoxicating aroma of essential oils. Always ensure that you add the essential oil to a carrier oil first, and never apply directly to your skin. A carrier oil, also known as base oil, is used to dilute essential oils before they applied to the skin.
Bathing – There is no better way to unwind than in an essential oil bath, calming oils like Lavender and Clary Sage are especially relaxing. Add 5-10 drops in a bath and disperse vigorously before entering the bath.
Steam inhalation – This is a really good way of helping to relieve blocked sinuses or congestion. Eucalyptus is one of the most popular oils for this. Fill a large bowl with hot (not boiling water), add 3-4 drops of your chosen oil then lean over the bowl placing a towel over your head and slowly breathe in the until you start to feel relief.
Diffusers – There are many diffusers available, one of the most popular being an ultrasonic diffuser which uses water to create a fine mist. These are a great way of enjoying oils throughout the day in your home or office space. Citrus oils are particularly uplifting. Ideally leave your diffuser on for up to an hour at a time, leaving it off for a similar amount of time.

Common Eucalyptus: Has a clear, sharp, and fresh scent. It is a decongestant and is associated with aiding respiratory issues. It also has antibacterial and stimulating effects.
Wintergreen: Contains methyl salicylate, which is similar to aspirin and is known for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is often used in products for muscle and joint discomfort.
Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender Fine): Known for its calming, relaxing, and balancing effects. It can also have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities.
Field Mint (also known as Corn Mint or Wild Mint): Provides a cooling sensation and can have calming effects on the body. It is also known for its ability to soothe digestive issues and its refreshing scent.
Ravintsara: Is a powerful oil thought to support the immune system and has antiviral properties. It's often used for respiratory ailments and for its clarifying, uplifting scent.
How will it help me?
Respiratory Support: The combination of eucalyptus, wintergreen, and ravintsara could help ease breathing in cases of congestion or respiratory infections.
Pain Relief: Clove, wintergreen, and mint oils can provide a natural analgesic effect for sore muscles, joint pain, or headaches.
Immune Support: The antiseptic and immune-boosting properties of many of these oils could potentially help bolster the body's defences, especially during cold and flu season.
Stress Relief and Relaxation: Lavender's calming effects, along with the cooling sensation of mint and the clean scent of eucalyptus, could help reduce stress and promote relaxation.
Household Cleaning: Due to the antibacterial and antiseptic properties of many of these oils, they could be used in homemade cleaning solutions to clean surfaces and freshen the air.
Essential Oil Safety
It's important to note that essential oils should be used with caution. They are highly concentrated and can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals. They should never be ingested unless specifically labelled for such use and should be diluted with a carrier oil or other solvents as recommended. Always consult with a healthcare provider or a professional aromatherapist, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or have any underlying health conditions.
